  • Japanese Paper for Printmaking of all Kinds and So Much More – a slide-talk by Nancy Jacobi

    Wednesday August 15th at 7pm
Free and open to the public at Martha Street Studio.

ASL interpretation services may be requested by 5pm on August 10 for Nancy Jacobi's talk, by email at askmartha@printmakers.mb.ca or by phone at 204 779-6253

In conjunction with Peter Graham's Introduction to Japanese Woodblock Prints printmaking workshop, Nancy Jacobi, founder of The Japanese Paper Place, will give a free public presentation about Japanese paper, emphasizing its uses by printmakers and media artists today. Nancy will also share her knowledge of its production and will have a number of papers on hand for sale.

Decades after founding The Japanese Paper Place (1982, Toronto ON), Nancy Jacobi continues to find new outlets to express her life’s passion for one of the world’s most precious artistic resources: washi. Her 2008 endeavour, "The World Washi Summit," brought together Japanese papermakers, artists, gallery owners and distributors of paper from around the world for a life-altering week of creative discovery. Each subsequent year in June and throughout the year Nancy has organized a smaller event along similar themes. In 2017 the Japanese Paper Place partnered with Propeller Gallery for "In the Spirit of Indigo," hosting an exhibition using vintage indigo gampi and offering numerous workshops related to blue. Nancy also makes time to enjoy baroque music, theatre, Tai Chi, swimming at her summer cottage and traveling the world.

This is a new opportunity that will provide First Nations, Metis or Inuit arts administration professionals with a specialized opportunity to become immersed in the community of contemporary Arts creation and presentation in Winnipeg.

The program seeks to champion Indigenous leaders in the Arts Community and develop deeper relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous arts administrators, practitioners and organizations. This fellowship has been developed through an extensive consultation process with Indigenous and non-Indigenous members of the arts community in Winnipeg and across Canada, as well as training agencies and employment specialists.

Fellowships are paid positions and recipients will receive mentorship, professional development, and management skills. Fellows will receive arts-focused management training in not-for-profit governance, financial management, leadership and human resources.

“Values around reconciliation have always been part of our work but it’s important to be intentional and demonstrate our commitment. We know there are talented, committed and creative Indigenous artists in this community but we’d like to see more in leadership positions. We asked ourselves, how can we create space and opportunity? We are so pleased that Martha Street Studio and the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, two progressive, excellent organizations are participating.”

    Carol A. Phillips

    Executive Director, Winnipeg Arts Council

“We are honoured to be part of this exciting initiative and are happy to welcome someone to the team,” says Kristin Nelson, Executive Director of Martha Street Studio. “As an organization we work toward enriching the lives of all Manitobans through the print arts. Martha Street Studio has teamed up with Centre[3] for Print and Media Arts in Hamilton, Ontario, on a Residency Exchange program. Laine Groeneweg and Susan Aydan Abbott are the inaugural recipients of the residency. Join us at Martha Street Studio on September 22nd from 7-8pm for an artist talk with Groeneweg, and on October 6th from 7-8pm  November 10th from 7-8 pm for an artist talk with Abbott.

Both events are free and open to the public.

    ———————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Laine Groeneweg is a printmaker currently living in Hamilton, Canada. He received his BFA from York University in 2004 and subsequently trained at Fondazione Il Bisonte Per Lo Studio Dell’Arte Grafica in Florence, Italy with a focus on intaglio printmaking.

In 2012 Laine opened Smokestack in Hamilton, Ontario – a studio that focuses on limited edition printing and the production of print-based artist projects. It is through this studio that he makes his own work as well as that for others.  Laine also continues to work as a collaborative printer at Toronto's Open Studio and Centre[3].

Laine is most widely recognized for his work in mezzotint. His prints explore the possibilities of a traditional technique in the wake of more contemporary production methods. Often characterized by themes of dream and play, his whimsical imagery blurs the line between reality and fiction.

Laine's prints have been shown both Nationally and Internationally and are held in the permanent collections of the Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts (Ekaterinburg, Russia), Art Gallery of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia), and in the archives at Fondazione Il Bisonte Per Lo Studio Dell’Arte Grafica (Florence,Italy).

    ———————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Susan Aydan Abbott is a recipient of Martha Street Studio and Centre[3]'s Residency Exchange. She was recently in residence at Centre[3], working on a project using printmaking and other media to explore Century Manor (formely the Hamilton Asylum for the Insane) in tandem with her own personal history with mental illness.

Booby Hatch (Wo)manifesto: A Feminine Perspective of Century Manor (Hamilton Asylum for the Insane) will explore the asylum's dark past in tangent with Abbott's own personal history of mental illness. The artist's intent is to bring darkness to light by confronting how unresolved trauma lingers, smouldering in the shadows, permeating the soil, landscape, and structure of both the asylum and herself. At the same time, the artist questions whether there has been a significant change in the way mental illness is perceived and treated in contemporary society.

Abbott was born in Port Arthur, Ontario, in 1962. She works primarily in the medium of painting but has expanded her practice to include printmaking, sculpture, video, and large-scale installation. She attended the University of Manitoba, Fine Arts program. She has had solo shows and has been in many group shows in Winnipeg. Abbott is a person with lived experience who shares her life story through her work as a trained speaker for the Canadian Mental Health Association and the United Way. She serves on both the ArtsAccessAbility Network Manitoba board and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority mental health advisory board.

CW for this talk: rape, trauma, addiction

  • Longtime volunteer Gary Styrchak nominated for WAC Arts Award

Martha Street Studio is pleased to have nominated Gary Styrchak for the Winnipeg Arts Council's Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Outstading Volunteer Arts Award for his long history of volunteer service to Martha Street Studio and his many contributions to the Winnipeg arts and culture community.

Gary is Martha Street Studio's longest serving board member, having served since the reorganization of MSS in 2001. He has acted as secretary to the board with consistent attendance and is a solid team player and contributor to all matters of the board. It is acknowledged by the former and current membership of MSS that without the sustained effort by Gary and other volunteers, involving countless hours, the current MSS facility would not have been developed or become operational.

Winners for the WAC Arts Awards will be announced at the Mayor's Luncheon for the Arts on June 8th, 2017.
