  • Book launch and Studio Edition viewing with David McMillan

    Friday May 17, 7pm
McNally Robinson Booksellers, 1120 Grant Ave., Winnipeg, MB

    ASL interpretation will be provided.

Join us for an evening at McNally Robinson Booksellers with acclaimed photographer David McMillan to celebrate the launch of his new photobook from Steidl, Growth and Decay: Prypiat and the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and to view his Martha Street Studio Edition Parquet Floor Variations, Prypiat, Ukraine. This event is presented by Martha Street Studio and features the artist in conversation with Border Crossings.

This event is free to attend and open to the public. The presentation will be followed by a book signing.

David McMillan began his career as a painter, receiving an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1973, but gradually became more involved with photography. A concern for the vulnerability of the environment led him to photograph in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, the site of what is considered to be the world's worst nuclear accident. Having returned to the site over 20 times since 1994, Growth and Decay serves as a record of McMillan’s lifetime commitment to this monumental project. As McMillan has explained: "When I first ventured to Chernobyl in 1994, the experience was thrilling and totally absorbing. I felt I had found a subject both inexhaustible and consequential. I wanted to make photographs describing something I hadn’t seen before, which had the potential to be simultaneously beautiful and unsettling."

McMillan taught photography at the University of Manitoba for 39 years and has had over thirty solo exhibitions since 1980 and some sixty selected publications, including catalogs for such major surveys as Photography in Canada 1960–2000 (National Gallery of Canada, 2017) and Camera Atomica (Art Gallery of Ontario, 2015). His work has been featured internationally with showings in Hong Kong, Serbia (former Yugoslavia), Iceland, Finland, Israel, Australia, China, Germany, and the USA.

Martha Street Studio Editions are limited edition prints and folios, created in a number of different techniques and in innovative ways. They are made by studio technicians and the artist, and include etchings, screen prints and digital works. The Studio Editions include artwork by Manitoban artists including David McMillan, Daniel Barrow, Scott Benesiinaabandan, Michael Dumontier & Neil Farber, Aganetha Dyck, Simon Hughes, and Wanda Koop. Studio Editions are viewable on our webstore.

Today it includes some of the world’s most renowned photographers and artists including Joel Sternfeld, Bruce Davidson, Robert Frank, Robert Adams, Karl Lagerfeld, Lewis Baltz, Dayanita Singh, Ed Ruscha, Roni Horn and Juergen Teller.

    Charles Grant Marshall, B.I.D, M.A, F.P.I.D.I.M (1931 – 2012)

Grant Marshall was raised in West Kildonan and spent a lifetime creating beautiful, functional environments – as an interior designer, artist, volunteer and teacher. He was a recipient of the Governor General’s Award and graduated with a Bachelor of Interior Design, from the University of Manitoba in 1955. As an accomplished designer, Grant was responsible for many of the interiors that defined Winnipeg’s 1950’s modern architecture boom, including the Monarch Life Building (now Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba) at 333 Broadway. Grant also designed costumes and sets for Rainbow Stage, Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers and the Royal  Winnipeg Ballet – where he met his wife Marnie, the company’s principle dancer. Grant was additionally on the advisory committee for the Manitoba Craft Guild and was a founding member of the Interior Designers of Canada Foundation. As a volunteer, Grant created joyful atmospheres for charitable agencies, including the Ronald McDonald House and Anne Ross Day Nursery at Mount Carmel Clinic, for which he received the Manitoba Premier’s Award of Excellence. As an artist, he was a talented watercolourist who helped shape Winnipeg’s visual art scene and was an owner of one of the first private art galleries in the city in the 1960’s along with Bruce Head and Winston Leathers. Grant produced solo exhibitions at Leonard Marcoe Studio Gallery, Winnipeg (1980 – 2012) and at the University of Manitoba and participated in group exhibitions at Site Gallery (1995-2012) and at the Charles Herman Gallery in Vancouver. For three decades, Grant owned a store stocking modern furniture and fashions from Europe, contributing to Winnipeggers’ sense of style. While Grant was proud of his awards and exhibitions, his 40-year teaching career and being Department Head of the University of Manitoba’s Department of Interior Design (1989 to 1994) were huge highlights.

    Artist Statement:

Parquet Floor Variations, Prypiat, Ukraine shows nine sections of a department store floor found in the city of Prypiat, uninhabitable since the accident at the nearby Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The photographs forming the basis of the print were made in 2016, thirty years after the accident. The floor reflects the general decay apparent in all of the built surfaces of Prypiat, and although each floor section was identical to the next when first laid, each has deteriorated in its own way.

    Bio:

A concern for the vulnerability of the environment led him to photograph in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, the site of what is considered to be the world's worst nuclear accident.
